Why Are Window Grilles Important?

Keeping Our Dogs Safe at Home: Why Window Grilles Matter

In Singapore, the weather can be unpredictable — sunshine one moment, thunderstorms the next. And while we may shrug off sudden rainstorms, many dogs don’t cope as easily. For some, especially rescue dogs, thunder and heavy rain can trigger intense anxiety and panic.

Over the years, we’ve seen heartbreaking cases where frightened dogs have leapt out of windows or balconies during storms. These incidents are devastating — not only for the dogs, but also for the adopters and fosterers who loved them. The trauma of knowing such accidents could have been prevented stays with us.

This is why SOSD now requires all adopters to install secure window grilles before homestay, and to ensure windows are closed when their dog is home alone. It may seem like a drastic measure — and you might feel confident that it could never happen in your home. Many thought the same, until the unimaginable became real.

Once a dog jumps, there is no second chance. No amount of love or vigilance after the fact can undo the loss. Prevention truly is the only protection.

We have gathered and shared real-life stories to raise awareness about the importance of securing windows and balconies for our canine companions. These experiences are difficult to read, but they serve a vital purpose: to keep more dogs safe, loved, and alive.
